The coal hod is another fireplace fixture with an unusual name. Hod means a receptacle for carrying and holding coal or small pieces of wood. The early ones were made of iron or tole with elaborate designs, usually on the front of the hod. The shapes of coal hods varied but most were cylindrical with a open or hinged tops. The designs ranged from pin stripped japanned finishes to hand painted floral and landscape scenes. Animal paintings were especially popular with dog and cats often used.

Mid 19th century, brass and copper was used to construct the traditional cylindrical and box forms; plus many variations of the round helmet shaped hods. These had metal handles that pivoted or stationary wooden and metal ones. More versatile than in the past, the coal hod today is not only capable of holding firewood chips but also serves to hold magazines, flowers etc.
